Frances Okala

The Full Story

The Artist:

Frances Okala is a woman of dual passions: architecture and art. Born and raised in Nigeria, she earned her degree in architecture from the University of Nigeria before moving to the United States to build her career. But while she was designing structures, something else was calling her need to create freely, to explore pattern and meaning beyond blueprints.

So she picked up a pen and ink, and began to draw.

The Work:

Okala’s art is intricate, meditative, and almost hypnotic. Using fine pen strokes, she builds elaborate patterns on black-and-white or richly colored backgrounds, designs that feel both ancient and contemporary. Her motifs are drawn from traditional African aesthetics, but they’re abstracted, reimagined, alive.

Some pieces depict everyday moments, ceremonies, gatherings, and processions, but filtered through a lens that emphasises rhythm and repetition. You can almost hear the music in her work, feel the pulse of drums, the movement of bodies in ritual.

Why Her Work Matters:

Okala believes that understanding where we come from is essential to moving forward. Her art is a love letter to African culture and history, a reminder that our roots hold wisdom, beauty, and power. In a fast-paced, ever-changing world, her intricate designs ask us to slow down, look closer, and remember.

When you wear Frances Okala’s work, you’re not just wearing a pattern. You’re wearing a philosophy: that honouring our past enriches our present.
