Richard Izege

Richard Izege

The Artist:

Richard Izege is a storyteller who paints. A graduate of Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, he’s spent years working across creative disciplines - graphic design, video production, advertising, but painting is where his heart lives. It’s where he’s most honest, most free.

His work orbits around three core themes, but one stands out above all: femininity. Not the idealised, commercialised version we see everywhere, but the real, lived experience of women - their beauty, strength, complexity, and quiet power.

The Work:

Izege’s paintings are bold, geometric, and unapologetically colourful. His style is often cubist, breaking subjects into angular shapes and vibrant planes of colour. Faces are sometimes obscured or rendered as silhouettes, adorned with intricate geometric patterns that might be headwraps, hairstyles, or pure abstraction.

The ambiguity is intentional. By leaving certain elements open to interpretation, Izege invites you into the work to project your own meaning, your own experience, your own emotions onto the canvas.

His subjects aren’t anonymous; they’re universal. They capture moments of beauty, fantasy, introspection, and everyday life in Lagos. There’s intimacy in his work, even when the figures aren’t fully defined. You feel their presence.

Why His Work Matters:

In a world that often reduces women to one-dimensional images, Izege paints them as multifaceted, powerful, and deeply human. His work preserves moments that might otherwise be forgotten, tells stories that deserve to be heard, and celebrates beauty in all its forms.

When you wear Richard Izege’s art, you’re wearing a statement: that women are not one thing, but many. That identity is layered. That colour and pattern and form can say what words sometimes can’t.

And that art…real art isn’t made for money. It’s made because it must be made.
